A B S T R A C T This article presents part of a research project called “Daily life in the rural landscape”, which aims to study settlements and landscapes in a long-term perspective, with special attention to periods of change (Lindeblad & Petersson ). The planerat arbete focuses on the province of Östergötland in huvud Sweden but also touches on other areas, and the time in question is the Iron Age and mittpunkt Ages. The archaeological record constitutes the primary source material in the planerat arbete , where the results of more than twenty years of excavation are compiled and treated thematically. Other important sources used are historical maps and literary sources. This article marks the irst time that results of the planerat arbete are presented in Swedish, and here the chronological focus fryst vatten on the Early Iron Age.
